Archbishop John, born Prince Dmitry Alexeyevich Shakhovskoy (1902—1989), was a preacher, theologian and poet who signed his verse Strannik, the Wanderer. Born in Moscow, he lived through the revolution and civil war as a boy and left Russia in 1920 for Constantinople, Paris and Belgium. He was tonsured a monk on Mount Athos in 1926 and served in Serbia, Paris and Berlin before moving to the United States in 1946, where he became Bishop and, from 1961, Archbishop of San Francisco. For forty years he presented Conversations with the Russian People on Voice of America, speaking to listeners across a border he could not cross himself. His theological books were translated into English, German, Serbian and Japanese. He died in Santa Barbara in 1989.
